My Study Area: Hopewell Big Woods

I am choosing to study is known as the Hopewell Big Woods that located  mostly in the Schuylkill River watershed. It is the largest contiguous forest in southeastern Pennsylvania.  There are several reasons that I find this area to be interesting.  It combines recreation, historical preservation, and land conservation areas.  There are many governmental levels and private partners that have joined to preserve it.  It is also located near my home and I want to learn more.

This area played a part in the development of the iron industry as a major force in this area.  Pottstown was founded on land deeded by William Penn and its first iron forge was established in 1714.  Eventually, other furnaces and forges were located in the area, including Hopewell Furnace and Joanna Furnace.  Scars on the landform charcoal furnaces can still be seen today. There are thirty-five sites that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The natural resources include endangered species, wetlands, and unbroken forests and exceptional streams. There are 4,000 acres of old-growth, and 15, 000 acres of unbroken forests.  This area was designated as Pennsylvania’s first “night Skies Conservation Area.”  Recreation takes place on public and open-to-the-public lands including hiking, fishing camping, and horseback riding.  Two well-known trails that travel through this area are the Schuylkill River Trail and the Horse Shoe Trail, there are also smaller trails that are connected as well.

I believe there is a wealth of biodiversity to study in the area.  I also want to learn about the partnerships that have joined together to preserve this area and are still adding new lands as they are able.
